Climate Change – What we’re doing / Freedom Fuels 10 for 10

In August 2011 Freedom Fuels Australia will celebrate it’s 10th Birthday. We launched 10 for 10 in July 2009, setting out 10 commitments to achieve by the time we reach our 10th Birthday.

Through 10 for 10 we are working with our customers and our suppliers to combat climate change, reduce waste, use sustainable and renewable resources, and help our customers to emit less CO2 every time they use their vehicles.

The three pillars represent the key areas where we believe we can tackle the biggest challenges facing us as a retailer. These three areas are: Lower Carbon Fuels, Operational Efficiency, Waste Reduction.

Underpinning the pillars are our 10 for 10 Milestones, the big wins which will help us reach our targets.

Climate Credentials – What we’ve done so far

  • Sell Ethanol and Biodiesel blended renewable fuels. For every litre of E10, 200grams of CO2 is saved. For Every litre of B20, 500 grams of CO2 is saved.
  • Produce in excess of 10,000 tonnes less CO2 each month through our commitment to renewable fuels over the past 3 years.
  • In 3 years reduced emissions by an estimated 450,000 tonnes through supplying renewable fuels to retail, wholesale and commercial customers.
  • Removed plastic bags from our stores and replaced them with biocompostable bags.
  • Testing new under canopy CFL globes as a replacement for the old style metal halide lights. Estimate a saving of 281 tonnes CO2 annually, a 70% reduction in energy consumption.
  • Green Spot Program where a selection of stores are testing energy efficient and waste reduction programs like forecourt recycling.
  • Using all biodegradable cleaning products.
  • Using all recycled paper products.
  • Using recycled packaging in our fresh food outlets.
  • Voluntary Member of the National Packaging Covenant.
  • Printing double sided on recycled paper saving 50 trees every year.
  • Using Recycled Printing Paper. We use 31 tonnes of A4 paper a year and by swapping to recycled we’ve consumed 60% less energy, 55% less water, created 74% less air pollution, and 35% less water pollution.
  • Climate Smart Challenge. $50 rebated by Freedom Fuels.
  • Using Biodiesel in our own fleet of 29 trucks. 70,000 litres of B20 equivalent saves 21 tonnes of CO2 a month.
  • Installing new Point of Sale will reduce receipt paper use by up to one third.
